Denver & Rio Grande Western RR
Davenport diesel switcher #50
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.
Davenport Locomotive works built #50 in 1937 for the Sumpter Valley Railroad
as their number 101 in May of 1937. It stayed on the SV until 1963 when it was purchased by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad as the only narrow gauge diesel the D&RGW ever bought. The others that had been on the D&RGW property were US Army #3000 and US Army #4700N and both were running on the Grande
as a test for the Army more than for the Grande. It stayed on the DRGW until 1970 when the D&RGW began scrapping the majority of their remaining narrow gauge trackage. In 1970 it was sold to Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad and then
sold to the Durango & Silverton Narrow gauge Railroad where it stayed only a
few short years before being sold (inoperable) to the Colorado Railroad Museum
in 1984 where it was restored to operational condition in the past few years.
