Class 23 & 24, 42' Steel fishbelly, rebuilt from s.g.
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.
This volume shows all the details on these cars which started out as standard gauge gondolas that were then cut down starting in 1939. At 42' long these were among the longest revenue cars on the road. From the late 1940's through 1950's there were 5 cars that were used to deliver automobiles along the NG lines and they had stakes to hold up canvas covers. In 1955 cars 6526 & 6527 had bulkhead ends attached to carry wallboard(sheetrock). 28 survived the transfer to the C&TS and D&Sng with both roads getting 14 cars each. The Cumbres & Toltec used most of theirs to use for underframes when making passenger coaches. The Durango & Silverton were able to keep the Silverton trains intact so were able to keep most as flats.
