Denver & Rio Grande Western RR
High Side, Pipe, & Passenger Gondolas
Class 15, #1500-1899 series
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.
This volume shows all the details on this car, inside and out of all 3 major variations. These cars were built as lower side gondolas, later additional boards were added to the sides increasing the cubic capacity of the cars and they stayed like that until
the oil and gas fields in the Farmington, NM area became active in the 1950's. Because most of these cars passed through the Salida "Barrel Transfer", additional side stake splices were required because many were broken or cracked in normal
use, making each car unique. A listing of the cars and splice patterns is found in "A Century + 10 of D&RGW NG Freight cars..." . Once the oil and gas field business began, many of these cars had their ends removed so that they could carry drilling and well pipe that was longer than the cars. And finally once the cars passed to the C&TS NG Railroad, seating was provided for those wanting an open air ride.
