This locomotive was one of the last in service on the D&RGW narrow gauge lines. It was donated to the city of Montrose, CO by the D&RGW when it was retired and displayed there for years until approached by the National Park Service to be part of a historical display about the historical significance of the railroad in the area after the Blue Mesa Reservoir project was completed which flooded the junction with the Lake City branch and a number of the smaller towns. It and the cars and Caboose are on 99 year lease and the 278 has just come out of a multi year restoration project.
There are many close-up images in this book
taken both before and after the restoration
that illustrate the cosmetic and material defects that were present prior to being taken off the bridge and sent in for rebuilding. A number of questions were answered with the restoration
and a few more were either created or the
waters even more muddied than before. Many discussed in the text and captions throughout.
This book is spiral bound so it lays flat
and has heavy duty,
full color, paper covers. It is 8 1/2" tall and
5 1/2" wide.
