Colorado & Southern Railroad
Wooden Underframe Coal Cars (Gons)
4246-4407 series cars
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white
photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.
This series of cars was built in 1902 and was among the last wooden underframe
cars built by the Colorado & Southern though many lasted until the end of service
on the road. These cars are 30' long cars but unlike the DRGW cars of similar
design, these only had 6 side stakes versus 7 or 8 on the Grande, and because
these cars were never subjected to the damaging forces fo the Salida Barrel Transfer, none of the stakes had to be spliced. Also the top boards were in
fairly good shape. This car which sits above Blackhawk, has two paint schemes showing through on the car side. One is the Colorado & Southern in the black
ball design and the other is the earlier COLORADO & SOUTHERN all spelled
out across the car side. The photos in this book include many views with
rulers present and also show off all the major and minor detiasl of the class
including the unique trucks under this car and the stake pocket design too.
